How to set up a Window Time Server
|
|
|
|
Window 2000
It has an integrated network time synchronization service, installed by default, and this service can be configured to synchronize on a time server. If we change the associated registry settings then this service can act as both a time client and a time server to synchronize the other network time clients. The Windows Time Service should be present there in the systems service list. The application executable is ‘w32time.exe’. The parameter list for time service should be present in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServiceW32TimeParameters
This operating system can operate as a time client and synchronize to a time server by setting the parameter ‘NTP Server’ to the IP address of a Time server.
After every eight hours or three times a day these Windows 2000 operating machine will synchronize to the specified time server, this duration may not be enough to maintain accurate synchronization and can be easily increased. By setting the Period parameter to how many times the synchronization is required, this period can be reduced.
By setting the ‘LocalNtp’ registry to 1, the Windows 2000 operating system can also be configured to act as a time client. The service must be restarted after changing any of the registry settings for the settings to take effect. The time service can be controlled from the control applet in Administrative Tools menu. The time service can also be controlled by the DOS net command using:
net start w32time’ and net stop w 32time’
Window 2003
With the help of Windows 2003, Microsoft has reportedly expanded on the original Windows 2000 time service by providing a true NTP implementation. The Windows 2003 time service can synchronize to NTP server. This can also act as both a time server and a client to synchronize other network clients in the domain, by changing the registry settings. The ‘Window Time’ service should be present in the system service list. The executable application is ‘w32time.exe’. The Window 2003 time services parameter list should be present in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServiceW32Time
A number of problems may be faced when setting up the Windows Time Service. NTP operates on UDP protocol over TCP/IP therefore; the TCP/IP protocol must be functional then only NTP will operate successfully. The problem in synchronization may also arise when NTP attempts to synchronize to an inaccurate timing reference or if network delays.
Time servers can also be used for synchronizing network components such as switches, routers and hubs. Any network component that can synchronize to a NTP server can be pointed to the Windows server to achieve synchronization and in the way, the whole network and accompanying products can be accurately synchronized.
