The Medical Council of India (MCI) was established in 1934 with the prime objective of establishing parity in the standards of higher qualification in medicine and recognition of medical qualifications in India and abroad. The MCI was originally started under the provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933. With changing times, it gradually came to be felt that the provisions of the Act were not adequate enough to meet the challenges posed by the rapid development and progress of medical education in the country. Therefore, in 1956 the original Act was repealed and a new one was enacted. This was subsequently modified in 1964, 1993 and 2001.
The objectives of the MCI are maintenance of uniform standards of medical education, recommendation for recognition/de-recognition of medical qualifications of medical institutions of India or foreign countries, permanent /provisional registration of doctors with recognised medical qualifications and reciprocity with foreign countries in matter of mutual recognition of medical qualifications. The MCI plays a pivotal role in management and regulation of medical education in India. Without the approval of the MCI, doctors cannot begin clinical practice and even medical institutions cannot start new medical colleges or courses in India. Thus, there are several Medical Council of India recognised colleges all across the country. To know more about MCI approved college, visit www.sgei.org.
