One of the victims of the July 7th London bombings in 2005 has called for a Government compensation fund to help those injured by the blasts.
Andy Brown, 52, who lives on the Wirral with his wife and 3 children, lost both of his legs in the attacks and is calling for the Government to provide more financial support for the ‘forgotten’ victims.
Brown and his wife Jan are due to meet with Justice Secretary Jack Straw and will call for a levy of 5p on taxpayers to offer financial support to those who were affected by the terrorist bombings. He personally is asking for £1.7million to pay for lifetime care and a house with suitable wheelchair facilities. So far, he has received just £112,000 and under current law, the maximum he would be entitled to is just £500,000.
Speaking to the Liverpool Daily Post, Mrs Brown commented on the meeting, “We are having this meeting for everybody who is a victim of a terrorist attack – not just us.”
“Everyone seems to have forgotten about the victims of the bombings and about terrorism, which is wrong. Hopefully there will not be any more terrorist bombings, but I fear there probably will be – so there needs to be a much better compensation scheme in place.”
She added: “The compensation we have received is simply not enough for the severity of the injuries that Andy received.”
Gina Simpson of personal injury compensation claims company Aegis Law commented on the case:
“This is a classic example of a personal injury case which has wide reaching implications on the life of not only the victim, but also their family. It is clear that the compensation Mr. Brown has currently received is nowhere near enough. All of the unfortunate victims of terrorist attacks deserve to be adequately compensated for the disruption and distress they have been caused.”
